You are that vast thing that you see far, far off with great telescopes.

Who Is Alan Watts?

Born in England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master's degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies.

What's New

Supreme Identity

I am not one who believes that it is any necessary virtue in the philosopher to spend his life defending a consistent position. It is surely a kind of spiritual pride to refrain from 'thinking out loud,' and to be unwilling to let a thesis appear in print until you are prepared to champion it to the death. Philosophy, like science, is a social function, for a man cannot think rightly alone, and the philosopher must publish his thought as much to learn from criticism as to contribute to the sum of wisdom.

The Experience of Time

What you call 'the experience of time' is YOU. It's not something else altogether you see... which is a trap for you. You are time. Alright, you go on? You want to go on? Okay, you create time by wanting to go on. Why do you want to go on? 'Well' you say, 'because, uh, well, one must go on!' Why must you go on? You feel compelled? 'Yeah. It's our duty to go on.' How did you learn that idea?

The Nature of Consiousness

I find it a little difficult to say what the subject matter of this seminar is going to be, because it's too fundamental to give it a title. I'm going to talk about what there is. Now the first thing that we have to do is to get our perspectives with some background about the basic ideas that, as Westerners living today in the United States, influence our everyday common sense, our fundamental notions about what life is about. And there are historical origins for this which influence us more strongly than most people realize. Ideas of the world which are built into the very nature of the language we use, and of our ideas of logic, and of what makes sense altogether.
